Inhaltsangabe

Things fall apart tells two intertwining stories, both concerning on Onkonkwo, a "strong man" of an Ibo village in Nigeria. The first, a powerful fable of the immemorial conflict between the individual and society, traces Okonkwo's fall from grace with the tribal world. The second, as modern as the first is ancient, concerns the clash of cultures and the destruction of Okonkwo's world with the arrival of aggresive European missionaries.

These perfectly harmonized twin dramas are informed by an awareness capable of encompassing at once the life of nature, human history, and the myterious compulsions of the soul.

Unoka, for that was his father's name, had died ten years ago. In his day he was lazy and improvident and was quite incapable of thinking about tomorrow. If any money came his way, and it seldom did, he immediatly bought gourds of palm-wine, called round his neighbours and made merry. He always said that whenever he saw a dead man's mouth he saw the folly of not eating what one had in one's lifetime.

He stretched himself and scratched his tigh where a mosquito had bitten him as he slept. Another one was wailing near his right ear. He slapped the ear an hoped he had killed it. Why do they always go for one's ear? When he was a child his mother had told him a story about it. But it was as silly as all women's stories. Mosquito, she had said, had asked Ear to marry him, whereupon Ear fell on the floor in uncontrollable laughter. "How much longer do you think you will live?" she asked. "You are already a skeleton." Mosquito went away humiliated, and any time he passed her way he told Ear that he was still alive.

"Never kill a man who says nothing. Those men of Abame were fools. What did they know about the man?" He ground his teeth again and told a story to illustrate his point. "Mother Kite once sent her daughter to bring food. She went, and brought back a duckling. `You have done very well,`said Mother Kite to her daughter, `but tell me, what did the mother of the duckling say when you swooped and carried its child away?``It said nothing,`replied the young kite. `It just walked away. `You must return the duckling,`said Mother Kite. `There is something ominous behind the silence.`And so Daughter Kite returned the duckling and took a chick instead. `What did the mother of the chick do?`asked the old kite. `It cried and raved and cursed me,`said the young kite. `Then we can eat the chick,`said her mother. `There is nothing to fear from someone who shouts.`
